Perianthia and sporophytes

Identifying features

The rather strong, yellow-green plants are 1.5–2.5 mm wide and 1 cm long. They grow in flat blankets that are pressed against the substrate and up to the size of a palm. The flank leaves are bilobed, with rounded to ovoid upper lobes and much smaller, rectangular to square lower lobes. The leaf position is overshot, that is, the upper edge of one leaf covers the lower edge of the next leaf. Brood bodies are often formed at the leaf margins . The leaf cells in the middle of the leaf are 24 to 30 µm in size. Lower leaves are missing. The plants are monoecious . Male bracts are below the female. The female bracts are at the end of the stem and encompass the perianth . The leaf-like flattened perianthia with the sporophytes growing out of them are often formed.

Occurrence

The common scratch moss grows mainly on the bark of deciduous trees, especially maple , ash and poplar , rarely on rocks or earth. Light-rich to moderately shady locations in exposed forests and forest edges are preferred. The moss is distributed around the circumference and is sometimes common in Europe. The moss often grows together with the water sack moss ( Frullania dilatata ).
