Luther Leonidas Terry (born September 15, 1911 in Red Level , Covington County , Alabama , † March 29, 1985 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) was an American medic and from March 2, 1961 to October 1, 1965, Surgeon General of the United States . He was named Surgeon General by President John F. Kennedy and was best known for his warnings about the health effects of tobacco use .
