Regina Marcia Benjamin (born October 26, 1956 in Mobile , Alabama ) is an American medical doctor . She was named Surgeon General of the United States by President Barack Obama on July 13, 2009 , and served until July 16, 2014.

Life

Regina Benjamin studied medicine at the Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans and the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta . She received her PhD from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and completed her specialist training at the Medical Center of Central Georgia. In addition to her work as a self-employed doctor in Bayou La Batre , she completed an MBA at Tulane University and founded a clinic in Bayou La Batre, which offers largely free treatments for residents below the poverty line.

She was Associate Dean of Rural Medicine at the University of South Alabama . In 1995 she was elected as the first member under 40 years of age and the first African-American woman to join the board of trustees of the American Medical Association (AMA) , the largest professional body for doctors in the United States. In addition to many honorary activities, she is committed to the health care system in the USA, the American Board of Family Medicine and is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians .

On July 13, 2009, President Barack Obama appointed Regina Benjamin as the head of the public health service ("18th Surgeon General of the United States") in the USA. She headed the United States Public Health Service , an agency within the United States Department of Health . The "surgeon general" is a person who advises the United States government on all public health matters. Their appointment was confirmed by the US Senate on October 29, 2009.

Your primary mission should be US health care reform. Her term of office ended on July 16, 2014, and Rear Admiral Boris Lushniak was appointed as acting successor .
