Vivek Murthy

Vivek Hallegere Murthy (born July 10, 1977 in Huddersfield , United Kingdom ) is an American doctor . It was on December 18, 2014. President Barack Obama to head the Public Health Service ( United States Surgeon General appointed) of the United States. After US President Donald Trump took office , Murthy was relieved of his post on April 21, 2017.
Life
Vivek Murthy, whose parents emigrated from Karnataka , India, was born in Huddersfield, United Kingdom. When he was three years old, the family moved to Miami , where his father ran a doctor's office. After high school he attended Harvard University and graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree in Biochemical Sciences in 1997 . He then obtained his MD and MBA from Yale in 2003 .
After completing his training, he worked at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School . In addition to his main activities, he was also involved in charities. He served for eight years as the President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of VISIONS Worldwide , an AIDS and HIV education program in India and the United States . Together with his sister Rashmi, he founded VISIONS Worldwide during his student days. In 2008 he was one of the founders of the non-profit organization Doctors for America , which aims to bring about fundamental health care reform.
In 2011 he was appointed to President Barack Obama's advisory board at the Department of Health . In January 2013, in response to the rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School, he wrote an open letter to Congress on behalf of Doctors for America , urging them to enforce stricter gun laws. When Murthy was nominated by Obama as the 19th Surgeon General of the United States in November 2013, the gun lobby launched a protest that delayed the appointment for over a year. With 51 to 43 votes, he was confirmed by the US Senate on December 15, 2014 after his suitability for the office had been questioned - the 37-year-old was considered too young and an assumed lack of experience . Murthy's nomination for the office was warmly welcomed by over a hundred organizations in the medical and healthcare sectors. With the office, Murthy, as a non-combatant, also automatically held the military rank of Vice Admiral . On April 21, 2017, he was removed from office by President Donald Trump .
Vivek Murthy is married to Alice Chen, a doctor who is also one of the founders of Doctors for America .
