David Satcher

David Satcher (born March 2, 1941 in Anniston , Alabama ) is a former admiral of the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and served from 1998 to 2001 as the 10th Assistant Secretary for Health , and from 1998 to 2002 as the 16th Surgeon General of the United States . He was the first African American to serve as Surgeon General .

Life

Satcher graduated from Morehouse College in Atlanta in 1963 . He then studied medicine at Case Western Reserve University . From 1979 to 1982 Satcher was a professor at the Morehouse School of Medicine . From 1982 to 1993 he was President of Meharry Medical College in Nashville , Tennessee ; then he took over as director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention . From February 1998 to January 2001, Satcher was Surgeon General of the United States . He succeeded Joycelyn Elders in this office ; Audrey F. Manley had acted as acting . Satcher is a member of the Democratic Party . In 2001 the report The Call to Action to Promote Sexual Health and Responsible Sexual Behavior was adopted under his responsibility as Surgeon General of the United States .

Satcher is married to Nola Satcher and they have four children together. In 1996 he was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
