Jerome Michael Adams (born September 22, 1974 in Saint Mary's County , Maryland ) is an American specialist in anesthesiology and has served as Surgeon General of the United States as head of the United States Public Health Service since September 2017 .

Life

Adams grew up in Mechanicsville , Maryland and attended Chopticon Public High School. Adams earned bachelor's degrees in biochemistry and biopsychology from the University of Maryland Baltimore County ; he received a Masters in Public Health from the University of California, Berkeley .

His medical degree at Indiana University was supported by a scholarship from Eli Lilly and Company . He completed his internship year in internal medicine between 2002 and 2003 at St. Vincent's Hospital in Indianapolis . The subsequent medical training as anesthetist (2003-2006) he also completed at Indiana University .

In 2014 he became Indiana State Health Commissioner . Initially appointed by then Governor Mike Pence , Adams was confirmed in this office by the newly elected Governor Eric Holcomb in 2017, which he held until September of the same year.

On June 29, 2017, Adams was nominated for the office of Surgeon General of the United States by President Donald Trump . The United States Senate ratified him on August 3 of the same year. He took office on September 5, 2017. As Surgeon General of the United States, he has the rank of Vice Admiral .

He is married and has three children.
