The Mısır Çarşısı ("Egypt Bazaar ", also known as the Egyptian Bazaar and Spice Bazaar ) is a covered bazaar in Istanbul 's Eminönü district near the Galata Bridge and the New Mosque .

The floor plan is L-shaped, inside there are around 100 shops on both sides of Basarstrasse, only some of which are sorted by branch. Today, in addition to spices, textiles, electronics, newspapers and other items are also offered. The main branches are food and textile trade. A traditional restaurant is located above the main entrance on the Galata Bridge. The business premises are rented by the Istanbul city administration.

With access from several sides, the Mısır Çarşısı also serves as a connection between the numerous market stalls for vegetables, meat and fish, household goods, pets and clothing that surround it. This open bazaar district extends uphill to Kapalı Çarşı , the so-called "Grand Bazaar".

history

Even before the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople (1453) , in the Byzantine Middle Ages, the entire surrounding quarter was quarters for traders from the Italian Maritime Republics ( Venetians , Pisans , Genoese and Ancona and Ragusa ); Today's Hasircilar caddesi was the Venetians' shopping street. Nearby, in the Jewish quarter in front of the "Jewish Gate", Jewish traders also lived and sold.

In his essay "Missir Tscharschi - bei den Gewürzhändler" from 1917, Friedrich Schrader describes the state of the spice bazaar at the end of the Ottoman period, when people stocked up not only with spices for cooking, but also with all kinds of traditional medicinal and bath herbs .

explosion

In 1998 an explosion occurred in the bazaar, killing seven people, including several children. The Turkish government assumed a PKK bomb attack and repeatedly brought charges against Pınar Selek , who was sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment in January 2013. To this day, however, it is still controversial among court-appointed appraisers whether the explosion in the bazaar was actually a detonation of a bomb or an accident involving a gas container. After the incident, security checks were temporarily tightened in front of the entrance to the bazaar.
