history

Founding years (1867 to 1918)

In 1867 the first forerunner of the GBH was founded. It was called the “Professional Association of Gilders, Painters and House Painter”, from which, on September 8, 1868, the “Professional Association of Bricklayer and Stonecutter Assistants in Vienna” developed. Only a year later the deputy Bernard Roser presented the Austrian parliament a petition that the granting of the right of association , had the abolition of forced association and the setting of Sunday work to the goal. This petition was initially successful, but a severe setback followed in 1870, because around Christmas Day 1869, during a large demonstration, members of the “Professional Association of Masons and Stonemasons Vienna” were arrested and sentenced to massive prison sentences. In addition, all professional associations were dissolved by law.

This led to violent reactions on the part of the workers, which finally forced the rulers to allow a new establishment under the name of the “trade association of bricklayers and stone masons”. The first Austrian Woodworkers' Day also took place at this time. Great things also happened for society as a whole, for example the stock market slump in 1873 led to mass unemployment and massive poverty . But the workforce emerged stronger from this crisis. The first construction workers 'congress commissioned an elected group to advance the merger of all construction workers' associations in Austria. The construction workers did this faster, but in 1893 the woodworkers followed suit and agreed to centralization. In 1904 the first collective agreement was signed.

The GBH in the First Republic (1914 to 1934)

After the end of the First World War , the associations of roofers , carpenters , painters and house painters joined the association of construction workers. The woodworkers were joined by turners , sculptors , foundries and plasterers . The dictatorial rule of the Dollfuss regime put the entire trade union movement under massive pressure.

The GBH in the underground and in war (1934 to 1945)

On the orders of Dollfuss, all social democratic or socialist organizations, including the trade unions, were banned.

After the end of the Second World War , the opportunity was used to form anew and so the construction and woodworkers merged to form GBH.

The GBH in the Second Republic (1945 to the present day)

On April 13, 1945 the commitment to a union formed for all parliamentary groups emerged, manifested in the name of the Austrian Union of Trade Unions . Much progress has been made, but not without resistance, e.g. B. Combating winter unemployment and making budget funds available to stimulate the construction industry, obtaining a vacation allowance, passing the Workers' Severance Pay Act, etc.
