Johann Driemer

Johann Driemer (born June 7, 1943 in Vienna ) is an Austrian trade unionist and politician.

He held numerous offices, including a member of the Viennese state parliament and municipal council of the SPÖ ( Social Democratic Party of Austria ), federal chairman of the Bau-Holz trade union ( GBH ) and vice-president of the Austrian trade union federation ( ÖGB ). He belonged to the group of social democratic trade unionists ( FSG ). He resigned all functions except for his voluntary work in his home district of Favoriten on May 1st, 2006 and retired .

Political career

Johann Driemer began his career as an apprentice baker after completing compulsory schooling. During this time he was already sensitized to the trade union movement on the occasion of a bakery workers' strike. He joined the Social Democratic Party of Austria (formerly Socialist Party of Austria) at an early age . After being a baker for four years, he was employed as a worker and employee of the Wienerberger company . He also graduated from the social academy. After successfully completing this, he moved to the workers' pension insurance company as a clerk. In 1974 he began his career at the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions . Shortly afterwards, his work as a secretary shifted to the construction timber branch . A short time later he was appointed central secretary, and in 1994 he took over the federal chairmanship of the Bau-Holz trade union. In 1995 he was elected Vice President of the Federation of Trade Unions. In the same year he was elected to the Vienna municipal council and state parliament. After that, a steep career began. So within a year he also became a member of the board of the Vienna Chamber of Labor , chairman of the construction workers' vacation and severance fund and first chairman of the general accident insurance company . At peak times he held six positions. After retiring in 2006, he limited his political commitment to voluntary work in his home district of Favoriten .

Private life

Johann Driemer was born in 1943 in the midst of the turmoil of the Second World War as the son of a shoemaker and a housewife. At an early age of 19, he married his wife Gertrude Rauch, a shoe seller who originally came from the German-speaking Burgenland and was just completing her apprenticeship in Vienna.
