Do Mohammed Ghazali "King Ghaz" Shafie (* 1922 in Kuala Lipis , Pahang , Malaysia ; † January 24, 2010 in Wangsa Baiduri , Subang Jaya near Kuala Lumpur ) was a Malaysian politician and businessman .

biography

Shafie entered the service of the Malayan Voluntary Force in 1941 and began to be politically active at an early stage. In 1946 he became a member of the Pahang Malay Association (Persatuan Melayu Pahang), where he was particularly active in the field of social welfare. After joining the United Malays National Organization (UMNO), he took on several leadership positions in the party from 1958. Among other things, he was chairman of the UMNO in the Kuala Lipis district and a member of the party's Supreme Council.

In 1961 he was initially a project manager and in the following year a member of the so-called Cobbold Commission , which laid the foundations for the formation of the Malaysia Federation , which on September 16, 1963 was formed from the previous Malaya Federation and the British Crown Colonies of Singapore , North Borneo (now Sabah ) and Sarawak came into being.

He was also from 1962 to 1988 President of the Malaysian Amateur Athletics Union.

In 1970 Prime Minister Abdul Razak appointed him Minister for Special Tasks in the government. He was also a senator between 1970 and 1972 . In 1981 he also became Minister of Information in the Razak cabinet. As part of a government reshuffle, Prime Minister Razak appointed him Minister of the Interior and Information, and held these offices under Razak's successor, Hussein Onn, until 1981. In 1974 he was also elected as a representative of the UMNO in the constituency of Lipis to a member of the House of Representatives ( Dewan Rakyat ) and was re-elected without an opponent in the period that followed.

Under Onn's successor as Prime Minister, Mahathir bin Mohamad , he was appointed Foreign Minister in 1981 and also became Vice President of the UMNO. On January 10, 1982, he narrowly escaped death when the Cessna he had flown crashed in Kampung Janda Baik on the flight from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Lipis. Both the co-pilot and his bodyguard were killed in the crash.

In 1984 he left the cabinet and entered the private sector , where he was chairman of a number of corporation firms including Paremba, Landmarks Holding Bhd and MUI Finance.
