Prince (Prințul) Gheorghe Grigore "Nababul" Cantacuzino (born September 22, 1832 or 1837 in Bucharest ; † March 23, 1913 ibid) was a Romanian politician of the Conservative Party ( Partidul Conservator ) , who among other things between 1899 and 1900 and again from 1905 to 1907 was Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Romania .

Life

Prince (Prințul) Gheorghe Grigore Cantacuzino came from the Wallachian- Romanian noble family Cantacuzino , which had its origins in Greece . He began his political career in May 1869 when he succeeded Panait Iatropol as mayor of Bucharest and held this post until he was replaced by Eftimie Diamandescu in January 1870. He then acted in the Principality of Romania in 1870 as Minister of Justice in the cabinet of Prime Minister Alexandru G. Golescu and between 1873 and 1875 first as Minister of Agriculture, Trade and Public Works and then from 1875 to 1876 as Minister of Finance in the cabinet of Prime Minister Lascăr Catargiu .

In the Kingdom of Romania Cantacuzino, who was a member of the Conservative Party ( Partidul Conservator ) founded in 1880, was President of the Chamber of Deputies (Adunarea Deputaților) for the first time between 1889 and 1891 and President of the Senate (Senatul) for the first time from 1892 to 1895 . On April 11, 1899 he succeeded Dimitrie Alexandru Sturdza as Prime Minister (Președinții Consiliului de Miniștri) and held this office until he was replaced by Petru Carp on July 6, 1900. In his cabinet he took over from April 11, 1899 to 9. January 1900 at the same time the post of interior minister (Miniştrul de internal) . He was then again President of the Chamber of Deputies from 1900 to 1901.

On December 22, 1904, Cantacuzino succeeded Dimitrie Alexandru Sturdza for the second time as Prime Minister and held the office until March 12, 1907, whereupon Dimitrie Alexandru Sturdza again succeeded him. In his second cabinet he held the office of Interior Minister again between December 22, 1904 and March 12, 1907. Most recently he was President of the Senate again from 1911 until his death in 1913 .
