Petru Carp
Petru P. Carp (born June 29, 1837 in Jassy , † June 19, 1919 in Țibăneşti) was a Romanian boyar and statesman .
Life
Raised in Berlin , Carp studied political science at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . In 1859 he became a member of the Corps Borussia Bonn . He returned to Romania in 1862 and carried out the overthrow of Alexandru Ioan Cuza . After the arrival of Prince Charles , he went to Paris as the first secretary of the diplomatic agency . As a member of parliament he was one of the opponents of the Brătianu ministry , was Minister of Foreign Affairs in the short-lived Epureanu cabinet and later a diplomatic agent in Vienna for a few years .
When he returned home, he again took a lively part in parliamentary life and particularly supported Majorescu's educational reform , which he succeeded. When the young and old conservatives split up in the struggle for educational reform, and as a result the Catargiu ministry fell, Carp sought a reorganization of the conservative party. This is how the June Party led by Carp was born.
Under the following ministry, Bratianu, Carp defended Romania's rights on the Danube issue in Vienna and opposed the liberal government on all issues.
In 1888 Carp became foreign minister in the Rosetti cabinet . In December 1891 he took over the management of the Ministry of Agriculture, Industry and Trade in the Catargiu Ministry. In October 1895, he and the other two junior members of the ministry were dismissed, which resulted in the overthrow of the entire Catargiu cabinet.
In July 1900 he took office as prime minister and finance minister, but had to resign on February 26, 1901 because his tax plans were not approved by the chamber. From January 14, 1911 to April 10, 1912 he was again Prime Minister. This time he failed because of unpopular measures, e.g. B. the nationalization of the trams.
