Manolache Costache Epureanu (born August 22, 1820 in Bârlad , Principality of Moldova , today: Romania ; † September 7, 1880 in Wiesbaden ) was a Romanian politician of the National Liberal Party ( Partidul Național Liberal ) , who among other things was Prime Minister of the Principality of Moldova from 1859 to 1860 , Prime Minister of the Principality of Wallachia between 1860 and 1861 and Prime Minister of the Principality of Romania from 1870 to 1876 .

Life

Epureanu studied law at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg , the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin , the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen and the Universität Jena . After obtaining a doctorate in law , he returned to his homeland and worked as a lawyer . He took part in the Moldavian Revolution in 1848 against the increasingly authoritarian Prince Michael Stourdza . On May 9, 1859, he replaced Ion Ghica as Prime Minister of the Principality of Moldova and held this office until he was replaced by Mihail Kogălniceanu on April 15, 1860. About two months later, on July 25, 1860, he took over the office of Prime Minister from Nicolae Golescu of the Principality of Wallachia and exercised it until May 12, 1861, after which Barbu Catargiu succeeded him.

After the union of the two principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia to form the Principality of Romania on December 24, 1861, Epureanu acted from December 12, 1865 to January 3, 1866, first as President of the Chamber of Deputies (Adunarea Deputaților) and, after a short break, from May 9 to July 6, 1866 as President of the Constituent Assembly. On April 20, 1870 he took over from Alexandru G. Golescu for the first time the office of Prime Minister (Președinții Consiliului de Miniștri) and held this office until he was replaced by Ion Ghica on December 26, 1870. In his first cabinet he also took over the office of the Interior Minister (Ministru de internal) . In the government of Prime Minister Lascăr Catargiu he was Minister of Justice from October 28, 1872 to March 31, 1873.

Epureanu, who joined the newly founded National Liberal Party ( Partidul Național Liberal ) in 1875 , replaced Ion Emanuel Florescu as Prime Minister of the Principality of Romania on April 27, 1876 and held this office until July 23, 1876, whereupon Ion C. Brătianu was his successor started. At the same time he held the offices of Minister for Agriculture, Trade and Public Works in his second cabinet .
