Giancarlo Piretti (* 1940 in Bologna ) is an Italian furniture designer .

life and work

Piretti studied at the Istituto Statale d'Arte in Bologna , where he graduated as Insegnante di Disegno (drawing teacher). In 1960 he attended the Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna . He then taught interior design at the Istituto Statale d'Arte in Bologna for seven years . Also in 1960 Piretti began his work as chief designer and development manager of the furniture manufacturer Anonima Castelli , where he designed numerous models (especially seating furniture) for twelve years until 1972 and thus played a key role in the company's international success.

One of his well-known designs is the plia foldable plastic chair , which he presented at the Fiera del Mobile in Milan in 1967 and which has sold more than four million pieces since 1969. The object won the BIO5 prize at the Ljubljana Biennale in 1971 and the German Gute Form design prize in 1973 . Copies of the chair are in collections of museums in Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovenia and the United States.

Piretti's other designs for Anonima Castelli include the stacking chair DCS 106 (1965), the armchair Plona (1969), the chair Alky (around 1970), the tables Plantone (1970) and Plano (1971, gold medal IBD), the coat stand Planto ( 1972), the modular sofa system 61 (1973), the Plurium umbrella stand . as well as the ergonomic seating systems Vertebra (1979, SMAU Industrial Design Award ) and Dorsal (1981) conceived together with the Argentine architect and designer Emilio Ambasz . From 1984 to 1986 he worked for Castilia , a company in the Castelli Group that specialized in the manufacture of home furniture. He designed Dilungo (an extendable table), Dilemma (a clothes rack), Tensa (a folding chair with a stretch fabric cover ), Dispiego (a table with foldable legs) and Dilato (a modular bookshelf system).

Dilungo was awarded the title “Furniture of the Year” in 1985 by the magazine Schöner Wohnen . In 1987 he received the Compasso d'Oro industrial design award for Dilungo and Dilemma . In 1988, at the NeoCon exhibition in Chicago, Piretti presented the Piretti Collection with over 50 different seating furniture, of which more than two and a half million were sold. For this, Piretti received the Institute of Business Designers Award (IBD for short, USA) in 1989 and the American Society of Interior Designers Awards (ASID for short, USA) in 1990, the Compasso d'Oro award (Italy) in 1991 and the Good Design Award (short G Mark , Japan). The wood and metal seats Xylon from 1992 brought him two more G Mark awards in 1994 . The Torsion collection from 1995-96 consisted of a range of office chairs with a swiveling backrest and various accessories, for which he received the G Mark Prize in 1997 . In 2000, Piretti presented the R model on wheels and with a folding seat at NeoCon (Chicago) to complement the Torsion line, where it won the Golden Award for the best stackable chair. He received an honorable mention at the Compasso d'Oro award ceremony in 1998 for the Piego table and Tat-Amo sofa bed.
