Vincent Van Gogh saw the starry sky between September 20 and 30, 1888. In 2007, Gianluca Masi calculated the date on the basis of the star constellation.

Gianluca Masi (* 1972 ) is an Italian amateur astronomer and asteroid explorer.

He has worked at the Astronomical Observatory of Campo Catino since 1988 . He makes his current observations at the Osservatorio Astronomico Bellatrix in Ceccano, founded in 1997 .

On August 1, 1997, Masi discovered a variable star near the Dumbbell Nebula (M 27).

Between 1998 and 2003 he discovered a total of 23 asteroids , some of them together with Franco Mallia and R. Michelsen .

In 2006 he started the "Virtual Telescope project", which more than 120,000 people use annually to virtually view events and objects in the sky. The system consists of various automatic telescopes that are available in real time on the Internet.

In September 2007, by comparing the star constellations, he succeeded in determining the days between September 20 and 30, 1888 as the point in time that Vincent van Gogh had recorded in his painting Starry Night over the Rhone .

The asteroid (21795) Masi was named after him.
