Gig Harbor is a city in Pierce County in the US state of Washington . Gig Harbor is located in Puget Sound , an approximately 150 km long, island-rich and widely ramified fjord-like bay in northwest Washington. The city has a population of around 6,500 and is about an hour's drive from Seattle .
history
In 1840, American naval officer and polar explorer Charles Wilkes steered his gig - a small rowing dinghy - into a natural harbor during a severe storm in Puget Sound . On a map published in 1841, Wilkes named this sheltered bay Gig Harbor .
In 1867 Samuel Jerisich came to Gig Harbor and founded the first settlement there with other immigrants from Croatia, Sweden and Norway.
Fishing and shipbuilding were the main industries until the construction of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge . The improved accessibility accelerated economic growth in the area. Today Gig Harbor is considered a wealthy suburb of Tacoma .
