Gil Clancy

Gil Clancy (born May 30, 1922 as Gilbert Thomas Clancy , † March 31, 2011 ) was an American boxing coach and manager. Former WBA world champion in the light heavyweight Eddie Mustafa Muhammad was managed, among other things from him.

Coaching career

Emile Griffith , who had a nearly 20-year career, was trained exclusively by him.

Clancy coached 1968 Olympic heavyweight champion George Foreman after losing to Muhammad Ali in 1974 until losing to Jimmy Young in 1977 (Foreman took a 10-year hiatus after Young's defeat). Clancy was named "Manager of the Year" by the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) in 1967 and 1973, and in 1983 with the Sam Taub Award .

Clanty was considered one of the best both as a trainer and as a manager.

In 1993, Clanty was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .
