Gilford Earl " Gil " Duggan , (born December 26, 1914 in Benton , Arkansas , USA ; † October 18, 1974 in Harrah , Oklahoma , USA), nickname : Cactus Face , was an American football player and police officer . He played as a defensive tackle in the National Football League (NFL) with the New York Giants and the Chicago Cardinals, among others .

Player career

Gil Duggan studied at the University of Oklahoma and played for their football team , the Oklahoma Sooners , on the position of a defensive tackle. In 1939 he was voted All American for his athletic achievements . That year, the Steve Owen- trained New York Giants voted him 140th in the NFL Draft in the 15th round. In 1942 he moved to the Chicago Cardinals, supervised by Jimmy Conzelman . Duggan and the Cardinals remained unsuccessful that year, after which Phil Handler took over the coaching office for the team from Chicago . Due to a player shortage during World War II , the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Chicago team had to form a game community in 1944 and were trained that season by handlers and the Steelers' trainer , Walt Kiesling . The Cardinals remained unsuccessful in 1943, but also in 1944 as a syndicate with the Steelers, and could not win a game. Duggan moved in 1946 to the Los Angeles Dons , which were located in the newly formed All-America Football Conference (AAFC) and were supervised by Dudley DeGroot . After another game year in 1947 with the Buffalo Bills ended Duggan, who served in the free time in Oklahoma as a state trooper his career. He died in 1974 and is buried in Memory Lane Cemetery , Harrah.
