Gila Gamliel ( Hebrew גילה גמליאל; * February 24, 1974 in Gedera ) is an Israeli politician from the Likud .

biography

Origin and early years

Gamliel was born in Gedera, central Israel, the youngest of five children. Her mother is Libyan - of Jewish origin, her father was born to Jewish parents in Yemen. Gamliel completed her military service in the Israeli Air Force , then studied Middle Eastern history and philosophy at Ben Gurion University in the Negev , where she was chair of the student council . She later also studied law at Ono Academic College and Bar Ilan University .

Political career

From February 17, 2003 to April 17, 2006 she was a member of the 16th Knesset . In the elections to the 17th Knesset, she missed entering parliament. She later cited the reason for her failure “that she was only 28 years old in her first legislative term and simply too inexperienced for this job”. In 2009 she was able to return to parliament as a member of the 18th Knesset . From March 30, 2005 to January 14, 2006, she was Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development in the second government of Ariel Sharon . From 2009 to 2013 she was again Deputy Minister, at that time with responsibility for youth, students and women, in the second government of Benjamin Netanyahu . She returned to the Knesset in the 2013 elections , but this time she did not fill a ministerial post. In the primary elections for the 20th Knesset , she reached 13th place on the Likud list and then became Minister of Social Justice in Netanyahu's fourth government. In the fifth Netanyahu cabinet , which was formed in May 2020, she took over the post of environment minister .

Private life

During her student days, Gamliel was in a relationship with Sagiv Assulin, one of her staff members on the school council. Assulin was also on the Likud list in 2008, when the couple had split up, at number 35. However, in return for Gamliel, who was in 19th place, it failed to move into parliament when Likud reached 27 seats. Gila Gamliel has been married to Tiberias Hovav Damri since 2008 . With him she has two daughters, Tahel and Yael. The family lives in Tel Aviv .
