The Gilbern GT , later the Gilbern 1800 GT , was the first passenger car from the British manufacturer Gilbern .

description

The GT, a 2 + 2 seat coupe, was the company's first car and was produced from 1959 to 1967. The GT Mk. I was initially available either with the 948 cc BMC-A engine as in the Austin-Healey Sprite , which was equipped with an additional Shorrocks compressor, or with the 1098 cc engine from Coventry Climax . The chassis was welded together from rectangular tubes, the front axle with double wishbones came from the Austin A35 , the rear axle from the Morris Minor . But it was changed and instead of leaf springs it was suspended from four trailing arms and a Panhard rod and had spring-damper units . The body was laminated in one piece. Although it was a kit car , the body was fully equipped and painted so that the buyer only had to install the mechanical components.

Later versions were equipped with BMC engines of the B series with 1500 or 1600 cm³ from the MGA or the 1800 cm³ engine from the MGB . They had the coil-sprung rear axle from BMC. Since the large engine was available, the car was called the 1800 GT . 280 pieces were made in eight years. There is currently only one Gilbern GT (formerly "383 FAX", built in 1962) in Germany, which is the vehicle shown in the 1962 brochure.

A 1.6-liter in-line four-cylinder car from the MGA was tested by The Motor magazine in 1961. The top speed was determined to be 151.73 km / h and the acceleration from 0-100 km / h it managed in 13.8 seconds. The gasoline consumption was 8.1 l / 100 km and the test car cost £ 978 including taxes of £ 251 .

With a wheelbase of 2337 to 2362 mm, the vehicle was 3810 to 3918 mm long, 1524 to 1543 mm wide and 1321 mm high. The curb weight was given as 864 to 876 kg.
