Gilles Chabrier

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gilles Chabrier is a French astrophysicist .

Life and scientific work

Gilles Chabriers studied physics at the École normal supérieure de Lyon (ENS) in Lyon. After receiving his doctorate, he conducted research at the University of Rochester . In the early 1990s he set up a research group on astrophysics at the ENS Lyon in collaboration with the local observatory, the Observatoire de Lyon . This resulted in the Center de recherche astronomique de Lyon in 1995 , since 2007 called Center de Recherche Astrophysique de Lyon (CRAL). The CRAL is supported by the University of Lyon I , the ENS Lyon and the Center national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS). Chabrier heads one of the three research groups at CRAL. He is also Director of Research at the Center national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS).

His specialty are brown dwarfs . Even before they were discovered in 1995, together with France Allard and Isabelle Baraffe, he developed the theory of the development and structure of brown dwarfs. He also devoted himself to the white dwarfs , the equations of state of dense astrophysical plasmas and the physics of protostars and exoplanets .
