Gimmlitztal with Weicheltmühle near Reichenau

The Gimmlitztal stretches from the Hermsdorf lime works to the Lichtenberg dam or to the confluence with the Freiberg Mulde below Lichtenberg in the Eastern Ore Mountains . The Gimmlitz , a right tributary of the Freiberg Mulde, flows through it. The valley forms the eastern border of the Erzgebirge / Vogtland Nature Park in Saxony up to the federal highway 171 .

In the vicinity of the lime works there are nature conservation meadows where orchids , arnica and cotton grass can be found.

Some former watermills are still in the valley, whereby the Weicheltmühle and Illingmühle have been preserved as functional watermills (technical monument).

The Gimmlitztal is also known as the “valley of the mills”. Around 1900 there were still around 23 water mills in the approximately 25 km long tributary of the Freiberger Mulde. Many fell victim to the construction of the Lichtenberg dam around 1970 and no longer exist. In detail, these are the following mills (downstream):

  • Dirt mill
  • Weicheltmühle (grinding mill, oil mill, food pounder / bone pounder, water mill with still functioning mill technology, technical monument)
  • Müllermühle or Niedere Weicheltmühle (built in 1869, was a sawmill)
  • Illingmühle (since 1791, sawmill until 1989, water mill with still functional mill technology, technical monument)
  • Kummermühle (to Frauenstein ), also sand mill (first washing, later sawmill)
  • former Finsterbuschmühle (silver wash)
  • former Ratsmühle (oldest mill in Frauenstein, demolished in 1970)
  • former fulling mill (probably the oldest mill in the valley, demolished in 1970)
  • former Schillermühle (demolished 1970)
  • former Kempemühle (demolished 1970)
  • former stone mill (1862–1897) in the valley of the Kleine Gimmlitz (near Nassau)
  • former Erlermühle (in Burkersdorf, demolished in 1970)
  • Burkersdorf pond house (demolished in 1970)

Today most of the mills have been sold to private individuals and are used as boarding houses or apartments.
