Gina Bovaird

Gina Bovaird (born May 29, 1949 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is a former American motorcycle racer and the only woman who started in the 500 cc class of the motorcycle world championship .

Gina Bovaird was the first woman to place in the top ten drivers in an AMA race. In 1979 she took part in the Daytona 200 Motorcycle Race at Daytona International Speedway , which is very famous in America . She broke the record for the fastest newcomer with an average speed of 228 km / h. Bovaird was then invited in 1980 by the organizers of the race in Brands Hatch ( Great Britain ), where she rode a white Yamaha TZ 500 that was not advertised.

In 1981 she tried unsuccessfully to qualify in some races in the 500 cc class of the motorcycle world championship . At the German Grand Prix in Hockenheim , she also competed in the 125 cc class on an MBA 125. In 1982 the Japanese factory teams boycotted the French Grand Prix in Nogaro . There Bovaird managed to qualify for the starting grid on her Yamaha TZ 500. However, she was eliminated.
