Ginni Mahi ( Panjabi ਗਿੰਨੀ ਮਾਹੀ ) (born 1998 ) is an Indian singer from the Punjab , best known for her socially critical songs. In her texts, she primarily questions the role of the caste system in India. Ginni Mahi is mainly popular on YouTube and in her home state Punjab, but she has also made numerous international appearances in countries such as Greece and Italy. In 2018 she performed in Germany.

life and work

Ginni Mahi is from Jalandhar . She has been singing since she was seven years old. She made her first public appearance when she was thirteen. Her first album , entitled Guruan di Diwani , was released in 2015. She is considered a representative of the musical styles Chamar Pop and Ambedkar Folk , but her music also shows a clear influence of traditional Punjabi music, as well as electronic dance music and trap music . In her songs, Ginni Mahi is open to her origins from a Scheduled Castes . She is inspired to write texts by her own experiences. Her title Danger Chamar is a kind of musical answer to a fellow student who described the Chamar population, to which Ginni Mahi belongs, as dangerous. In one of her most famous pieces, the singer deals with the great role model of many Dalits , Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar . This song is titled Fan Baba Sahib Di , referring to the honorary name of this politician and social reformer, Baba Sahib . In addition to questions of the caste system, Ginni Mahi deals in her songs with the role of women in society. In this context, Ginni Mahi performed at the We The Women Festival in Mumbai in 2017 .

Ginni Mahi is studying music at the Hans Raj Mahila Maha Vidyalaya College and is aiming for a doctorate in this subject. Her father acts as her manager.

In 2018 Ginni Mahi appeared at the Global Media Forum of Deutsche Welle in Bonn.
