Giorgio Barberio Corsetti (* 1951 in Rome ) is an Italian theater director , opera director, dramaturge and stage actor.

life and work

Giorgio Barberio Corsetti studied at the Accademia nazionale d'arte drammatica in Rome and founded his own company in 1976, La Gaia Scienza and in 1984 the Compagnia Giorgio Barberio Corsetti . Giorgio Barberio Corsetti took part in documenta 8 in Kassel with Studio Azzurro .

Corsetti works on interdisciplinary issues and finds unconventional stage solutions. A special poetics of language, text, sound, movement and video is characteristic of his works. With experimental approaches he breaks new ground stylistically. A particularly intensive examination took place with the work of Kafka . At the 2001 Spielart theater festival in Munich, he surprised everyone with his staging of Kafka's “Trial”. In 2001 he founded Fattore K based on the character Mr. K. by Franz Kafka

In 1999 Giorgio Barberio Corsetti was appointed Artistic Director of the Theater Section at the Biennale di Venezia .

The first opera he staged in 1999 was Maria di Rohan at the  Teatro La Fenice . He realized the operas Estaba La Madre (Luis Bacalov), Le Luthier de Venise (Gualtiero Dazzi) at the Théâtre du Châtelet and the Witches of Venice by Philip Glass in the Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome. In 2018 he produced Bertolt Brecht's Threepenny Opera in Tokyo .

Awards

The production of The Trial was awarded the Prix ​​Ubu in 1999. Corsetti received the European Theater Prize for “New Theater Realities” .
