Giorgio Bellettini (born May 5, 1934 in Bologna ) is an Italian experimental elementary particle physicist . He was involved in the discovery of the top quark .

Bellettini received his diploma (Laurea) cum laude in physics from the University of Pisa in 1957 . He has been Professor in Pisa since 1979 and at the same time at Fermilab (Collider Detector Group, CDF ) since 1980 . 1980 to 2000 he was speaker of the Italian groups at the CDF.

1974 to 1976 he was director of the LNF laboratory at the Frascati accelerator of the Italian Society for Nuclear Physics (INFN). From 1980 to 1985 he was chairman of the ISR (Intersecting Storage Ring) committee of CERN and from 1992 to 1998 he was a member of the Scientific Council of CERN. From 1997 to 2001 he was also on the scientific advisory board of Fermilab.

In the late 1950s, he investigated the interactions of antiprotons . 1960 to 1963 he was spokesman for the group that researched the photoproduction of mesons at the early electron synchrotron in Frascati. From 1968 to 1974 he was the spokesman for the Pisa- Stony Brook collaboration at the ISR of CERN. There, in 1972, her group succeeded in demonstrating the increase in the total proton-proton cross-section at high energies. In the 1970s he also investigated muon pair production in proton-proton collisions.

Bellettini was the developer of the ALA magnetic spectrometer at the 2 GeV electron-positron storage ring ALA in Frascati.

In 1994/95 he was involved in the discovery of the top quark in the CDF collaboration of the Fermilab tevatron . The top quark was not experimentally proven until 18 years after the bottom quark, due to the immense energy required to generate it, although it was theoretically postulated as early as 1977 with the discovery of the bottom quark.

Bellettini received the Matteucci Medal in 2006 and the first prize of the Dubna Nuclear Research Center in 1999 . In 1999 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society . In 2000 he became Commendadore of the Italian Republic and in 1998 he received the Physics Prize of the Italian Ministry of Science.

  1. full professorship. Before that he already taught as an assistant professor: in Pisa for atomic physics (1960/61), electronics (1961-63), professor at the University of Pisa and nuclear physics (1966 to 1977), electron optics and particle accelerators (1978–1989), classical mechanics 1992 to 1996 (and in Ferrara 1989 to 1992), Physics with Particle Accelerators 1997 to 2006. According to Italian custom, lecturing activities are designated according to the subjects taught.
