biography

Giorgio Bolognetti was born on December 22, 1595 in Rome to Giovanni Battista and Casandra del Cavaliere.

He completed his legal studies in a Roman law firm and began his career in the prelature. When he worked under Cardinal Maffeo Barberini, he earned his esteem and when Barberini was elected to the pontificate under the name Urban VIII , he became part of the papal collaborators.

On September 23, 1630 he was appointed Bishop of Ascoli Satriano . On October 7, 1630 he was ordained bishop by Bishop Luigi Caetani , Cardinal Priest of Santa Pudenziana , with Antonio Ricciulli, Bishop Emeritus of Belcastro, and Benedetto Landi, Bishop of Fossombrone, serving as co-consecrators. With this dignity began his service in the ranks of the papal diplomacy. In fact, on November 8, 1631, he was appointed nuncio to the grand ducal court of Tuscany. Among the minor matters in the relations between Florence and Rome during the two years of the Tuscan nunciature was the question of the examination and then the condemnation of the Galilean labor.

Bolognetti was transferred to the French nunciature on March 26, 1634 as successor to Cardinal Alessandro Bichi. From a religious point of view in particular, the Holy See was concerned about the alliance between France and the Protestant powers that had developed in recent years, which could have brought about a revival of the Calvinist movement in the country. Another important issue was relations with the Sorbonne and the problem of increased censorship in the press.

Bolognetti left the Nunciature in Paris on August 8, 1639 and returned to Italy to devote himself exclusively to episcopal offices. In 1637, his transfer from the diocese of Ascoli Satriano to the Archbishopric of Nazareth based in Barletta in Rome was discussed but not pursued. On February 28, 1639 he was instead transferred to the Diocese of Rieti. He resided there for about twenty years, worked on the reform of the clergy, assembled a synod in 1647, the documents of which he published, and restored the bishop's palace.

On May 5, 1660, he finally moved to Rome, renounced the episcopate and became involved in various relief organizations, particularly in favor of the Roman hospitals of S. Giovanni Calabita , S. Maria della Consolazione and the SS. Trinità dei Pellegrini . He died in Rome on January 7, 1686.
