life and work

Spavento was the son of the carpenter Pietro Spavento. As an architect, he succeeds Mauro Codussi . From 1486 until his death in 1509 he was proto at St. Mark's Basilica. In this role, he managed all the construction work required to maintain and expand the cathedral.

On December 18, 1489, he received payment for a model of the campanile that had been struck by lightning four months earlier. Spavento directed the repair work on the Rialto Bridge , which lasted from 1502 to 1508. In 1502 he was invited by Verona as a consultant for the restoration of the Ponte Navi , a bridge over a branch of the Adige,

In 1505 the Fondaco dei Tedeschi was destroyed by fire and immediately rebuilt at the expense of the Republic. Spavento and a Girolamo Tedesco were commissioned with a model. Tedesco's design was carried out, but the construction work was directed by Spavento and Lo Scarpagnino. The fondaco was completed in 1508, and Tizian and Giorgione were able to add their frescoes to the facades, which have now largely been destroyed.

Spavento was the first proto of the Church of San Salvatore , which was completed under Sansovino , and whose facade was not completed until around 1700. In 1508 he directed work on the facade de cortiletto dei Senatori in the Doge's Palace .

He was a member of the Scuola Grande di San Marco brotherhood , he was married and had a son.
