Giorgos Georgiou
Giórgos Georgiou , Greek Γιώργος Γεωργίου (born April 9, 1963 in Nicosia or Afaneia, Famagusta district ) is a Greek Cypriot politician ( AKEL ). Georgiou was a member of the Cypriot House of Representatives from 2011 to 2019 . Since the European elections in 2019 he has been a member of the European Parliament as part of the GUE / NGL group .
Life
education
Giorgos Georgiou was born on April 9, 1963 in the Cypriot capital Nicosia (according to other information in Afaneia in the Famagusta district in the area now occupied by Turkey). After his school education he studied Greek literature from 1983 to 1987 with a focus on Byzantine and modern Greek literature at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens . He then went on to study history at the University of Cyprus .
After completing his academic training, Georgiou worked as a secondary school teacher for Greek in Cyprus for several years.
politics
Georgiou was already politically active during his studies in Athens and was, among other things, a member of the Progressive Student Movement. Back in Cyprus he became involved in the youth association of the United Democratic Youth Organization (EDON), the youth association of the AKEL . From 2009 to 2011 Georgiou was a board member in the Larnaka branch of AKEL.
In 2011 Georgiou ran in the Cypriot parliamentary elections for a seat in the House of Representatives in the constituency of Larnaka on the AKEL list, because he won. In the parliamentary elections in 2016 Georgiou defended his mandate. During his time in the House of Representatives, he was a member of the Agriculture and Natural Resources, Foreign and European Affairs Committees, the Security and Administration Committee, and the Education and Culture Committee. Georgiou was also a delegate for the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean .
In 2019, his party, AKEL, nominated Georgiou for the list of candidates for the 2019 European elections . In the election, AKEL won 27.5 percent of the votes and thus 2 of the 6 Cypriot seats. Georgiou won a mandate alongside Niyazi Kızılyürek . Both joined the Confederal Group of the European United Left / Nordic Green Left . Georgiou is a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs for the political group and a deputy member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy .

Georgiou is married and has three children.
