Giorgos Kaminis ( Greek Γιώργος Καμίνης ; born July 15, 1954 in New York ) is a Greek constitutional lawyer . He was the Greek Ombudsman from April 2003 to September 2010 and was elected Mayor of Athens on November 14, 2010 . Since 2019 he has been a member of the Greek parliament for the Kinima Allagis party .

biography

Kaminis was born in New York, where his father worked for the major Greek shipping company Stavros Livanos. The family later moved to Osaka , Japan, before returning to Athens in 1962.

Kaminis studied law at the University of Athens . After completing this degree, he completed postgraduate studies in public law at the University of Panthéon-Assas , after which he graduated from the University of Paris I , where he received his doctorate in 1982. He then received a research grant at the University of Athens, where he also worked as an assistant, from 1991 as a lecturer and from 1998 as an assistant professor.

From 1998 to 2003, Kaminis was Deputy Ombudsman for Human Rights, from April 2003 until his resignation in September 2010.

Kaminis is married and has two daughters.

mayor

In the local elections in November 2010, Kaminis ran as an independent candidate, supported by the social democratic ruling party PASOK , the ecologists / Greens , the Democratic Left , the Drasi and the Liberal Alliance against incumbent Nikitas Kaklamanis for the office of mayor of Athens. He received 52 percent of the vote in the second ballot and was able to win the office at the head of the Greek capital against the conservative Nea Dimokratia , which had previously held it for 24 years.
