Giovanni Battista Benaschi

Giovanni Battista Benaschi or Beinaschi (* 1636 in Fossano near Turin , † September 28, 1688 in Naples ) was an Italian Baroque painter .

He was particularly active between Rome and Naples. In the papal city, his works can be found in the Basilica of Santi Ambrogio e Carlo , the Church of San Bonaventura al Palatino and the Church of Santa Maria del Suffragio .

A Holy Family with Angels attributed to Beinaschi in a 1652 book by Gian Domenico Cerrini is kept in the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco .

Two paintings are also exhibited in the Diocesan Museum of Salerno:

  • Martyrdom of Saint Erasmus (third quarter of the 17th century), oil on canvas.
  • Moses lets the water flow out of the rock (third quarter of the 17th century), oil on canvas.

The painting of Saint Gregory in Glorie (approx. 1678–1679) is in the Rieti City Museum.

In Naples he painted frescoes for: the central nave and the dome of the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli a Pizzofalcone , the dome and the pronaos of the Church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli (only the pronaos has survived to this day), the apse of the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Caponapoli, the dome of the Church of Santi Apostoli , the arches of the nave and the vault of the sacristy of the Church of Girolamini , the choir of the Church of Santa Maria in Portico and the vault of the Oratorio della Compagnia dei Bianchi della Giustizia. There are also works on canvas in the Church of the Girolamini, the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Caponapoli and the Church of Santa Maria in Portico.

In the oratory of the Church of Santa Maria del Suffragio in Via Giulia 59A there are two large canvases by Beinaschi (approx. 5 × 3 m). They show a Daniel in the den of lions and the resurrection of Lazarus. There are two frescoes in the vault and in the lunette of the church. The ascension of Mary and the Eternal in glory between angels and cherubins.
