Santa Maria del Suffragio is a church from the 17th century in Rome and is located between the Via Giulia and the district Ponte .

history

In 1592 the brotherhood "del Suffragio" was founded in the church of San Biagio della Pagnotta with the task of praying for the souls of the deceased. The brotherhood was approved by Pope Clement VIII in 1594 , and in 1620 Pope Paul V raised it to the status of "arch brotherhood ".

As the church of San Biagio soon proved to be inadequate, in 1607 the brotherhood acquired part of the area originally intended for the Palazzo dei Tribunali, which was designed, started and never completed in Via Giulia under Pope Julius II of Bramante . The project was entrusted to the architect Carlo Rainaldi in 1662 , the church was completed in 1669, while the interior design continued until 1685.

description

The facade shows two rows of four pilasters that frame three portals below and a large central window above. The interior consists of a single nave with side chapels , which is covered by a barrel vault with lunettes. You can see two pictures with Daniel in the lions' den and the resurrection of Lazarus (both in the oratory) and the frescoes with the Eternal Father in glory and the Ascension in the choir by the baroque painter Giovanni Battista Benaschi .

In 1868 there were some changes inside by Tito Armellini and the design of the vault by Cesare Mariani (Coronation of the Virgin Mary) .

The second chapel on the right is by the architect of the church, Carlo Rainaldi (first chapel dedicated to the Petrosini family and then to “Santa Maria Consolatrice degli Afflitti”).

The third chapel on the left is under the patronage of the Mazzetti di Pietralata family and is dedicated to the “crucifix”: above the altar there is a large wooden crucifix by an unknown artist from the 18th century, surrounded by twelve relics set in wood. The frescoed barrel vault shows episodes from the Passion of Christ . According to the sources, there were originally paintings by Lanfranco (now in the Vicariate of Rome) on the side walls . These were replaced by marble grave monuments of the family members. On the left side of the chapel there is still a confessional, which is believed to be where Saint Vincenzo Pallotti made his confession. This church is also part of the Venerable Arciconfraternita dell'Assunta and Monte dei Morti by Vico Equense .

In the church is the grave of the priest Luigi Novarese, beatified on May 11, 2013, founder of the associations Centro Volontari della Sofferenza, Silenziosi Operai della Croce, Lega Prierdotale Mariana and Fratelli degli malati.
