The Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli a Pizzofalcone is a church in the historic center of the city of Naples , on the Pizzofalcone hill in the San Ferdinando district .

Historical

The church was founded in 1587 by the nobleman Costanza D'Oria del Carretto, who gave it to the Theatines. According to a plan by the architect Francesco Grimaldi , it was completely rebuilt in 1610 and took on its current appearance.

description

The church was designed with three naves in the shape of a Latin cross , with side chapels and a dome . The current facade was rebuilt in the second half of the 18th century.

The slender and imposing dome, designed by Grimaldi, dominates the church and thanks to the large windows in the drum it brings a lot of light into the interior.

The interior design was entrusted to Giovanni Battista Benaschi , who decorated the nave and transept (covered with a barrel vault ) with episodes from the life of the Virgin (1668–1675) and the dome with the coronation of the Virgin . Some of these representations, such as the presentation of the temple , were destroyed in the last war . Francesco Maria Caselli painted the large paintings around the middle of the 17th century for the apse and transept.

In the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception there is a painting by Massimo Stanzione depicting the Virgin Mary , while paintings by Giovan Bernardo Azzolino adorn the first and third chapels on the left.

Another important work in the basilica is preserved in the choir: San Gaetano by Luca Giordano from 1662. The high altar by Giovan Battista Broggia is neoclassical and shows on the right a beautiful painting by Paolo De Matteis depicting Saint Andrew in Represents ecstasy .

Also noteworthy are the two tombs that Tito Angelini created for the Serra di Gerace family in the first chapel. In the church there is also the marble monument of the lawyer Giuseppe de Gemmis (1734–1812).

Recently, archaeological finds from 16th century Naples have been found in the area on which the building stands, while work was being carried out on the new metro station.
