Sandro Zerafa

Sandro Zerafa (* 10. October 1975 in Malta ) is a Maltese jazz musician ( guitar ).

Zerafa received classical guitar lessons from Tony Pace. In 1997 he completed a classical guitar course at the University of Malta with distinction. The Malta Jazz Festival brought him closer to jazz and he began performing in Malta with Nicky Doublet, Bernard Scerri, Charles Gatt and others. In 1998 he moved to Lyon and studied at the Conservatory there with Mario Stantchev and Jean-Louis Almosnino (graduated with a gold medal in 2000).

After completing his studies, Zerafa moved to Paris, where he has lived since then and was active in the Paris jazz scene. He formed his first band with trombonist Sebastien Llado, which won third prize in the La Défense competition . With saxophonist Olivier Zanot and drummer David Georgelet, he founded the group The Jaywalkers , which then expanded into a quintet with Yoni Zelnik and David Prez. On his album Urban Poetics he worked with Laurent Coq , Yoni Zelnik and Karl Jannuska . In 2014, Zerafa released his third album as a leader, The Bigger Picture ; it was followed by More Light (2017). He is also a founding member of the Paris Jazz Underground jazz collective with Romain Pilon and David Prez . There was also collaboration with Chico Buarque , Manu Katché , Stjepko Gut , Marcia Maria, Catia Werneck , Aline de Lima , Sergio Krakowski and the singer Jiji, for whom he also arranged on the April Child album .

Zerafa has been artistic director of the Malta Jazz Festival since 2009 .
