Giovanni Bembo (born August 21, 1543 in Venice , † March 16, 1618 in Venice) was the 92nd Doge of Venice . He ruled from 1615 to 1618.

During his reign, tensions with Austria over the Uskoks came to a head, which finally ended in 1617 with the conquest of the city of Gradisca and the withdrawal of Austrian troops from parts of the Adriatic . In the peace treaty of Madrid , Austria undertook to relocate the Uskoks inland and burn their ships. In return, Venice had to give back all of the conquered Austrian cities on the Adriatic.
Because of the enormous costs of the war , a financial crisis ensued in Venice.

family

The Bembo family was one of the oldest families in Venice. It is first mentioned in Venetian files in 998, but has only provided one doge in its history. The best-known member of the family is the humanist author and poet Pietro Bembo .

Life

Giovanni was the third of five sons of Agostino Bembo and the wealthy middle-class Chiara Basso. He wasn't married. Bembo had long been a naval officer, so a suitable candidate for the coming armed conflict with Austria. At a young age he took part in the Battle of Lepanto and captured three Turkish ships. After Marcantonio Memmo, Bembo was another doge from the case vecchie , but only in the 114th ballot after a long conclave of 24 days. Bembo was already 78 years old at the time of his election. The last year of his dogat was determined by internal Venetian tensions, as members of the Senate were anonymously accused of having enriched themselves in the war or of having cooperated with the war opponent Spain. Bembo died on March 16, 1618, his grave in Venice is unknown.
