Giovanni Fulco (* 1605 in Messina , † 1680 in Rome ) was an Italian Baroque painter in Sicily .

Life

Fulco was initially a student of Antonio Catalano il Giovane (1585–1666) in Messina and then switched to Massimo Stanzione in Naples , from whom he took over the Chiaroscuro of Caravaggio and the elegant painting style of Guido Reni .

Back in Messina he worked as a painter of frescoes and altarpieces. Because of the anti-Spanish revolt of 1674 , Fulco had to leave Messina. Via Naples he went to Rome, where he died in 1680.

The drawings from his estate were secured by the famous painter Carlo Maratta , who appreciated Fulco's powerful and realistic painting style.

Most of Fulco's work was lost in the great earthquake of 1908 .

One of his students in Messina was Giovanni Lo Coco
