Giovanni Gastel (* 1955 in Milan ) is an Italian photographer .

Career

Giovanni Gastel began to approach photography in the early 1970s. In 1981 he worked for numerous fashion magazines, including Vogue , Elle and Vanity Fair and later also with world-famous brands such as Christian Dior , Trussardi , Krizia , Tod’s and Versace .

During these years of professional engagement, he began to develop his personal style, which was characterized by a poetic irony. His passion for art history led him to prefer a balanced composition for his photographs. His style is based on Pop Art and Irving Penn's photographic work .

From the early 1990s onwards, Gastel's professional success consolidated so much that his name was mentioned in specialist magazines together with that of photographers such as Oliviero Toscani , Giampaolo Barbieri , Ferdinando Scianna or next to that of Helmut Newton , Richard Avendon , Annie Leibovitz , Mario Testino and Jürgen Teller appeared. In 1997 the Milan Triennial dedicated his first personal exhibition to him. In 2002 Gastel received the La Kore Fashion Oskar.

Gastel is a grandson of the Italian director Luchino Visconti .
