Gisbert Combaz
Gisbert Corneille Henri Paul Combaz (born September 23, 1869 in Antwerp , † January 18, 1941 in Saint-Gilles ) was a Belgian artist (graphic artist, poster artist) and specialist in East Asian art.
Life
Gisbert Combaz first studied law at the Free University in Brussels , received his doctorate in 1891 and worked as a lawyer. Initially only active as an amateur artist, he exhibited at exhibitions from 1886. In 1893/94 he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels .
From 1895 Combaz taught drawing at the Agricole Institute in Gembloux . From 1898 to 1940 he taught at the École des Arts industrielles et décoratifs in Ixelles . In addition, from 1912 to 1939 he was Professor of Decorative Composition at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. His students included u. a. René Magritte .
On April 16, 1895, he married Martha Verhas, a daughter of the painter Jan Verhas , and had three children: Jean (1896), Suzanne (1897) and Denise (1903).
Combaz numerous graphic works of Art Nouveau : postcards, exhibition posters by the artist group “La Libre Esthétique”, designed books and also designed furniture, tiles and embroidery.
He also dealt intensively with the art of the art of the Far East and published a number of treatises on it.
