Jan Verhas (born January 9, 1834 in Dendermonde , † October 31, 1896 in Brussels ) was a Belgian genre and children's painter.

Jan Verhas was the son of Frans Emmanuel Verhas, professor and director at the Dendermonde Art Academy, and his student. His older brother Frans Verhas (1827–1897) also became a painter.

Jan Verhas studied at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten van Antwerpen with Nicaise de Keyser . Thanks to the Prix de Rome he received, he spent some time in the Italian capital from 1860 onwards. He then moved to Paris , visited Turin , Milan and Venice in 1862 , lived in Binche in the province of Hainaut from 1864 to 1867 and finally settled in Brussels in 1867 as a freelance genre painter. He mainly painted children and elegant women enjoying games and entertainment.

He was made a member of the Legion of Honor in 1881. He was awarded medals at the Salon de Paris in 1881 and the Paris World Exhibition in 1889 . His daughter Martha married the painter Gisbert Combaz in 1895 .
