Gisulf I. (Benevento)
Gisulf I († 706 ) was Duke of Benevento from 689 to 706 .
Life
Gisulf was the second eldest son of dux Romuald I of Benevento and his wife Theuderada, daughter of dux Lupus of Friuli.
When his older brother Grimoald II died in 689, Gisulf succeeded him as dux von Benevento. He was married to Winiperga, with whom he had the son Romuald II .
Gisulf extended his ducat to the liris . Around 703 Gisulf conquered the Roman cities of Sura ( Sora ), Hirpinum ( Arpino ) and Arx ( Arce ) and marched through Campania, pillaging and plundering . Emissaries from Pope John VI met him near the city of Horrea (possibly Puteoli ) . , bought the prisoners free and brought Gisulf to end the campaign with "gifts".
After Gisulf's death in 706, his son Romuald II succeeded him as dux von Benevento.
