Giuseppe Cosenza

Giuseppe Cosenza (born February 20, 1788 in Naples , † March 30, 1863 in Capua ) was Archbishop of Capua and cardinal .

Life

Cosenza came from a Neapolitan noble family. He studied theology in his hometown and was ordained a priest on March 14, 1812 . He later taught theology, dogmatics and Hebrew in the Archdiocese of Naples .

Pope Gregory XVI appointed Cosenza bishop of Andria on March 21, 1832 . He was ordained bishop on July 8 of the same year by Cardinal Giovanni Francesco Falzacappa . In September 1850 Pope Pius IX appointed him . to the Archbishop of Capua and accepted him in the consistory of September 30th to the College of Cardinals . The titular church of Santa Maria in Traspontina was assigned to him. He was accepted as a Grand Cross Knight in the order of January . Cardinal Cosenza died in 1863 at the age of 75 and was buried in the Cathedral of Capua . After his death there was an eight-year vacancy in the Archdiocese of Capua, which only ended in 1871 with the appointment of Francesco Saverio Apuzzo , a cousin of Cardinal Cosenza.
