Giuseppe Gianfranceschi

Giuseppe Gianfranceschi SJ (born February 21, 1875 in Arcevia , † July 9, 1934 in Rome ) was an Italian Jesuit and scientist .

Giuseppe Gianfranceschi joined the religious order of the Jesuits and studied philosophy and Catholic theology , later literature , mathematics (1903) and physics (1905). He was professor of experimental physics at the University of Rome and taught physics, chemistry and astronomy at the Gregoriana.

From 1926 to 1930 he was rector of the Pontifical Gregorian University . Pope Benedict XV appointed him President of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences (1921-1936).

In 1928/29 he took part in Umberto Nobiles ' North Pole expedition .

Gianfranceschi presented the first plans for a radio station in 1925 and belongs together with Pope Pius XI. and Guglielmo Marconi among the creators of Vatican Radio . When Vatican Radio went into operation on September 21, 1930, he became its first general director.

The scientific investigations that he has made in various areas of physics are of great importance, especially into the structure of matter and the structure of the atom. He has published more than 140 publications.
