The Gjøa is the first ship to sail the Northwest Passage . Roald Amundsen succeeded in doing this in 1906 with a crew of six after a journey of more than three years.

history

The 21.3 m (70  feet ) long ship, a Hardangerjakt , was built in Rosendal ( Norway ) in 1872 and used for the fish trade for 28 years before the then 28-year-old Norwegian polar explorer Roald Amundsen used it for arctic expeditions in 1900 bought.

Participants in the expedition were (except for Amundsen) Godfred Hansen (1876–1937), Helmer Hanssen (1870–1956), Anton Lund (1864–1945), Peder Ristvedt (1873–1955), Gustav Juel Wiik (1878–1906) and Adolf Henrik Lindstrøm (1866-1939).

The voyage began on June 16, 1903 in Oslo and led the Gjøa through the narrowness between continental Canada and the south coast of Victoria Island . After three winter stays on the icy coasts of northern Canada, the Gjøa reached Nome ( Alaska ) on August 31, 1906. She sailed from there to San Francisco , where her crew - and especially her captain - received a hero's reception on October 19.

On this venture, the expedition made a series of measurements to determine the position of the magnetic north pole . Detailed ethnographic observations by the crew expanded the knowledge of science about the Eskimos ; not all were included in the official announcements about the course of the expedition. The coast of northern Canada was first described in detail.

The Gjøa was later bought by the Norwegian-American community and given to the city of San Francisco in 1909. This set up the ship in Golden Gate Park . In 1972 the Gjøa was bought back by Norway and is now in an extension of the Framuseum on the Bygdøy peninsula in Oslo .
