The glossy Mormon tulip ( Calochortus splendens ) is a species of the genus Mormon tulips ( Calochortus ) in the lily family (Liliaceae).
features
The shiny Mormon tulip is an autumn to spring green, perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 20 to 60 centimeters. This geophyte forms onions as persistence organs and a rhizome .
The hermaphrodite flower is radial symmetry and threefold. The outer bracts are deep purple and often spotted purple, the inside is 30 to 50 millimeters long, lavender to deep purple and have a purple blotch at the base. The nectar gland is square and hairy.
The flowering time is in August, sometimes it begins in July.
Occurrence
The shiny Mormon tulip occurs in southern and western California as well as in northwest Mexico in pine forests and bushes up to altitudes of 2800 meters.
