Gladys Mercedes Nordenstrom-Krenek (born May 23, 1924 in Mora , Minnesota ; † July 5, 2016 in Palm Springs , California ) was an American composer and third wife of the Austrian composer Ernst Krenek .

Life

Gladys Nordenstrom-Krenek studied music at the Institute of Fine Arts at Hamline University in Saint Paul (Minnesota) , where she met Ernst Krenek, a composer who taught there and who had emigrated from Austria. After graduating, she worked as a primary school teacher and moved to California with Krenek, whose third wife she became in 1950. In the following years she often accompanied her husband on his travels and after his death in 1991 she looked after his estate . Thanks to their initiative, it came to Austria, where the Ernst Krenek Institute was founded in Vienna in 1998 and the Ernst Krenek Private Foundation in Krems in 2004 . In 2006 Gladys Nordenstrom-Krenek was awarded the Great Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria .

The Ernst Krenek Private Foundation archives and administers Ernst Krenek's estate. With her numerous own compositions, including songs , chamber music and orchestral works , Gladys Nordenstrom-Krenek always stayed in the background.

Krenek was buried on August 23, 2016 in the Vienna Central Cemetery.

Works

As a composer, she joined serialism as the successor to Arnold Schönberg and Anton Webern . Her works include:

  • Rondo for Flute and Piano (WP 1948)
  • El Greco Fantasy for Strings (Premiere 1966)
  • Swift is death to strike a man . ( Death comes to life quickly ). In memoriam RF Kennedy (1968)
  • Work for Orchestra III (1974/75)
