The pollen is white.
The flowering period extends from October to March (rarely until April).
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 26.
Occurrence
The smooth crocus is found in the Aegean Sea . In Crete , the species grows in open, stony or rocky Phrygana, on rocks, on clay surfaces and in open pine forests at altitudes of 0 to 1400 (rarely up to 2350) meters. It is mostly found on lime.
use
The smooth crocus is rarely used as an ornamental plant in rock gardens. It has been in culture since 1832 at the latest. These cultivated plants go back to early flowering forms from the Cyclades. The 'Fontenayi' variety has purple flowers that are clearly streaked on the outside.
