Glenn Tryon (born August 2, 1898 in Juliaetta , Idaho as Glenn Monroe Kunkel , † April 18, 1970 in Orlando , Florida ) was an American actor, film director, screenwriter and film producer.

life and career

Glenn Tryon was already on stage from the age of ten, including in plays and vaudeville shows. He made his film debut in 1923 as a reporter opposite Charley Chase in Her Dangerous Path . In 1924, film producer Hal Roach became aware of Tryon, because after the departure of his star Harold Lloyd he was looking for a new leading actor for his comedies who should be funny and good-looking at the same time. The choice fell on Tryon, who starred several short film comedies by Roach in the following years, where he was supported in supporting roles by well-known comedians such as Stan Laurel , Oliver Hardy and James Finlayson . Laurel and Hardy had one of their first film appearances together as supporting actors in the Glynn Tryon comedy This Lady is a Guy from 1926. Tryon couldn't match the popularity of Harold Lloyd and his films, but the Roach films brought him notoriety.

Towards the end of the 1920s, Tryon turned increasingly serious roles, with his leading role as a lonely young factory worker in the love drama Two Young Hearts (1928) by Paul Fejos stands out. This film is considered Tryon's greatest acting success. A year later he played again under the direction of Fejos in the early sound film musical Broadway , this time in the role of a professional dancer. Soon after, his success waned and Tryon found himself mostly in B-movies in the early 1930s .

Tryon eventually moved behind the camera and became a director, screenwriter and producer. As a screenwriter, he mainly wrote for comedies, including Laurel and Hardy ( Die Wüstensöhne ) and the Marx Brothers ( Room Service ). As a director, Tryon was responsible for eleven films between 1934 and 1949, almost all of which were B-movies. As the director of the Henry Fonda film Zigeunerprinzessin he was fired in 1937 during the filming and replaced by Harold D. Schuster . In the early 1940s, Tryon worked for Universal Pictures as a producer of a number of comedies, including two films by the popular comedian duo Abbott and Costello . In 1942 he went back to Hal Roach, where he was director and producer of the anti-Nazi comedy That Nazty Nuisance with Bobby Watson in the leading role of the ridiculed Hitler . Occasionally Tryon stood in front of the camera for acting roles, most recently in 1951 in Home Town Story at the side of Jeffrey Lynn and Donald Crisp . In the 1950s he retired from the film business.

In 1924 he married the actress Lillian Hall (1896-1959), the marriage ended in divorce. From 1942 to 1947 he was married to the actress Jane Frazee (1918–1985), who also appeared in the film he produced In Hell ist der Teufel ist! occurred. From this marriage he had a son named Timothy.
