Bell in Chaunac

The bell in the church of St-Sulpice in Chaunac , a French commune in the Charente-Maritime department of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region , was cast in 1546. The church bell of bronze is as since 1908 Monument historique classified.

The 60 cm high bell from an unknown bell foundry has the following inscription: "IHS MA S SULPICE DE CHAUNAC L'AN MVCXLVI".

Unlike many other bells in the region, it was not melted down during the Huguenot Wars in the 16th century. Today it hangs in a wooden frame in the church.
