Life stations
Gloria Amparo Galeano Garcés was born in Medellín in 1958 . She studied there at the National University. She graduated from this course in 1983 with the title “Agricultural Engineer”. She spent the years from 1982 to 1984 in the Forest Resources Department at the university of the same name. In 1984 she was appointed to the Institute of Natural Sciences at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Bogotá . She received her PhD in Philosophy from Aarhus University in 1996.
Main areas of activity
She has published more than 20 articles and several books on the systematics of palms and, together with Andrew Henderson, published a monograph on Flora Neotropica on the genera Euterpe , Prestoea and Neonicholsonia . Her research at the Institute of Natural Sciences in Bogota deals with the taxonomy of palm trees, in particular with occurrences in the Chacó region. She also focuses her research on ethnobotanical questions. Together with Rodrigo Bernal , Galeano Garcés is developing a lexicon of common names for Colombian plants. In addition, she is committed to the conservation of threatened plant species. She is developing a four-volume red list of flowering plants in Colombia. The first volume was published in 2002.
