The Gmünder Au is a 184 hectare nature reserve in the municipalities of Pfatter and Wörth an der Donau in the district of Regensburg in Bavaria . The Gmünder Au lies north of the Danube in the Pfatterer district of Gmünd.
The nature reserve encompasses an old water arch of the Danube called the “Old Danube” , which was created in 1851 when a river bend was pierced in the course of straightening the Danube. However, a connection with the Danube in the east leads to annual floods. The Wiesent flows through the Alte Donau . The nature reserve is characterized by extensively used meadows, ponds with silting zones and wooded areas in the softwood meadows . It is also a resting, breeding and wintering area for rare bird species. In the west are the nature reserves Pfatterer Au (south of the Danube) and Stöcklwörth (north of the Danube), in the east, in the district of Straubing-Bogen, the nature reserve Donauauen near Stadldorf .
